Some of my fondest memories of my mother were the time I got to spend with her on the weekends taking her to what she called "My old Stompin Grounds". We would go to York County and she would show me where she was born and where her Daddy's people lived . She would talk to anybody we would meet , whether it would be a waitress at a resturant or somebody in the grocery store . She would say " I'm a Moore from York County !" Mama was very proud of that fact and I often wondered why it meant so much to her. We spent much time in Providence Methodist Cemetery on Dare Road Grafton Va. She would say "that is my Grandfather Joseph Thomas Moore" and "that is My Great Grandfather Merritt Moore". At the time I would think, umm its Saturday afternoon and I'm in a grave yard for petes sake. Mama would say '' Isn't it a shame Merritt doesn't have a marker denoting he was a Confederate Soldier ,he loved Virginia".
Its amazing how the years pass and your values change. I know I have become my mother now traipsing through her beloved York County and its cemeteries on a geneological quest that she inspired . My kids are grown so I'm knocking out what I call "My Bucket list( All the Things I want to get done before I kick the bucket). Well I acomplished one May 21st in becoming a Daughter of the Confederacy.,(that is something Mama would have loved to have seen). The 2nd one I want to scratch off my bucket list is Confederate Marker stones for The 3 Moore Brothers of the 32nd Virginia . Merritt buried at Providence Cemetery , James Presson buried in the Moore Cemetery in Poquoson and William buried in Oakwood Cemetery Richmond Va.
I have my lineage back to John Moore 1640 Charles Parish York county and have found out that I also have Patriots that were part of the Revolutionary War ,bucket list item #3 The Daughters of the American Revolution. In my genelogical quest I have met cousins and found two monuments in historical places that have my family on them. One at Saint Lukes Church Smithfield Va beside the church, it reads Merritt Moore from York County . He married Major Robinson's daughter Ann. The other monument is in Yorktown Va in front of The Gallery and Museum. It has William Moore listed as a civil war soldier. Yes I have become my mother very proud to be a Moore decendent from York County Virginia. I will publish pictures slowly in my quest for "Stones for Three Brothers of York County Va.

Update: Well I went through the process of trying to get the stones my 3 brothers of York County deserve, through the Department of Veteran Affairs Memorial Program Service. Got a lovely letter saying that they will not be approving stones for them because they are already Marked .WRONG! Merritt does not have anything denoting he was a civil war soldier at all. No Battalion, nor rank etc. They ought to be ashamed . Also niether does James Presson! William buried in Oakwood dosent even have a blade of grass with his name on it! They said I could take them to court and protest it . wow! All I can say is DEO VINDICE people. If I have to save every penny, They will have inground stones denoting their service.
